  The FCP270 FOXBORO Field Control Processor is a distributed,optional fault-tolerant,on-site installed controller module.FCP270 performs regulation,logic,timing,and sequential control together with the connected fieldbus module.It also performs data collection,alarm detection,and notification.FCP270 is connected to the Foxboro Evo control network through standard fiber optic 100Mbps Ethernet.The fault-tolerant version of FCP270 consists of two processor modules.These modules install FCP270 slots in the supported FCP270 backplane for high-speed communication between modules.

  Enhanced reliability(fault-tolerant)FCP270's unique and patented fault-tolerant operation greatly improves reliability related to other process controllers.The fault-tolerant version of FCP270 consists of two modules running in parallel,with two Ethernet connections to the Foxboro Evo control network.Two FCP270 modules are combined as fault-tolerant pairs to provide continuous operation of the controller in the event of any hardware failure within one of the modules in the pair.Both modules receive and process information simultaneously,and faults are detected by the module itself.One of the important methods for fault detection is to compare communication messages at external interfaces of modules.Only when both controllers agree on the message to be sent will the message leave the controller(bit matching prohibited).After detecting a fault,both modules will run self diagnosis to determine which module has a defect.Then,the defect free module ensures control without affecting normal system operation.

  Compared to only redundant controllers,this fault-tolerant solution has the following main advantages:

  Using controller data does not send bad messages to fields or applications,as messages are not allowed to flow out of the controller unless two modules match each other bit by bit on the sent message.

  The secondary controller is synchronized with the primary controller to ensure the provision of the latest data in the event of a malfunction in the primary controller.

  Before any switching,the auxiliary controller will detect a potential fault as it performs exactly the same operations as the main controller.

  The SPLITTER/combiner fault-tolerant FCP270 module is connected to a pair of fiber splitters/combiners,which are connected to Ethernet switches in the Foxboro Evocatrol network.For each module,the splitter/combiner pair provides splitter send/receive fiber optic connections for Ethernet switches 1 and 2.The connection of fiber optic cables enables the splitter/combiner to transfer inbound traffic from either switch to two modules and outbound traffic from the main module to either switch.The splitter/combiner pair is installed in a component that is fixed to the FCP270 substrate.A splitter/combiner is a passive device that does not use electricity.

  The enhanced communication Foxboro Evo architecture uses Foxboro Evo control network,with 100Mbps data communication between FCP270 and Ethernet switches.
